Text Box: St Joseph's Church in the heart of Sailortown was consecrated in 1879 and, for more than 100 years, served the spiritual needs of the dockland community and its many friends from the four quarters of this city and beyond.

The Catholic Church, intent on profit, closed the church in February 2001 without consultation and against the wishes of its 150 strong congregation. Clergy have desecrated this holy ground and attempted to deconsecrate it, but have failed to dent the faith of fifth generation worshippers and the many devoted newer members of this church who have found comfort here.

As you pass St Joseph's, spare a thought ,and a prayer, for the people of this chapel who are forced to worship in the street at 10.00am each Sunday morning. Their struggle to reopen and restore this sacred place holds no truck with narrow-minded carpetbaggers who would dispose of it. It is a struggle for justice and accountability that shames a Catholic Diocese that has lost touch with its people. It is a struggle of faith, conducted with humility, that puts prayer before profit.
